Propecia Dosage Inquiry

Forum Topic: Proper Dosage for Propecia

Post by HairHopeful123

Hi everyone,

I just got prescribed Propecia (finasteride) to help with my hair loss. My doctor gave me a 1mg tablet, but I've seen different forums where people are taking more or less than that. Shouldn't the dosage be standardized? What should I do?

Hello HairHopeful123,

Propecia (finasteride) is usually prescribed at a standard dose of 1mg per day for male pattern baldness. This has been shown to effectively reduce hair loss and promote new growth in most cases.

It's important not to exceed this dosage unless specifically directed by your doctor, as higher doses might increase the risk of side effects without necessarily providing additional benefits.

If you're concerned about the effectiveness or have any specific questions about your treatment plan, feel free to ask!

Thank you so much, DoctorDave! That's reassuring. Is there anything I should be aware of when taking Propecia? How long does it take before I might see results?

You're welcome, HairHopeful123!

When starting on Propecia (finasteride), here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Consistency: The medication needs to be taken daily for optimal benefits.
  • Side Effects: While rare, side effects can include reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and changes in breast tissue. If you experience any of these or other unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away.
  • Results Timing: It usually takes about 3-6 months to see significant improvements. Some men might notice a slight effect sooner, but patience is key!

It's also crucial not to stop taking the medication abruptly once you start seeing results, as this can cause hair loss to resume.

Hey DoctorDave,

I've been on Propecia for over 6 months and haven't noticed much difference. Should I consider increasing my dosage or trying something else?

Hi CurlyTop88,

It's important to be patient with the results of Propecia (finasteride). While some individuals see improvements within a few months, it can take up to 12 months to fully assess its effectiveness.

If you've been consistent and still haven't noticed significant changes after this period, it might be worth discussing alternative options with your doctor. Other treatments like minoxidil, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, or even hair transplants could be considered.

Increasing the dosage beyond 1mg/day is not recommended without medical guidance as it can increase side effects and isn't necessarily more effective.

Always consult with a healthcare provider before making any changes to your treatment plan!
